Intelligent light from ZKW honored with Lower Austrian Innovation Prize
ZKW Lichtsysteme GmbH from Wieselburg received the Lower Austrian Innovation Prize, valued at 10,000 euros, on October 1st for a new kind of lighting module. The prize was awarded during a ceremony at Burg Perchtoldsdorf by State Economic Counselor Petra Bohuslav and Sonja Zwazl, President of the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce. The project that won the award, “[HD] mirrorZ” is a new, high-resolution headlamp that allows for dynamic lighting distribution and makes it possible to project symbols. The system sets new standards for traffic safety. “The innovation prize confirms our approach to innovation and investment in research and development. Our goal is to offer our clients forward-thinking solutions and improve traffic safety” says Oliver Schubert, CEO of the ZKW Group.
Intelligent high beams
With PixelLite, ZKW has already set new standards for high resolution lighting systems that automatically deliver a glare-free, continuous high beam. The new [HD] mirrorZ technology goes a step further, making it possible to communicate with other road users via an optical chip that generates 1.3-million-pixel, high-resolution images using light, such as symbols. A control unit developed by ZKW processes the data from multiple sensors, adapting the light to current traffic circumstances. In the future, the technology will be used in autonomous vehicles as well as to support camera sensors. The [HD] mirrorZ module is slated for initial installation in series production vehicles in 2020.
10,000 euros for internal innovation area
During the award ceremony, CEO Oliver Schubert announced that he intended to use the prize money to support and fund other ZKW innovations. “In the future, ZKW wants to give the topic of innovation plenty of space – literally. We will use the 10,000 euros for a project that will create the appropriate facilities to allow for free and creative thinking at ZKW” says Schubert.
Because of its win, ZKW was also nominated for the State Prize for Innovation, the highest official award granted to companies in Austria.
