Apprenticeship - A look into your future at ZKW
We develop and produce lighting and headlamp systems as well as electronic components for the world’s car manufacturers. The focus is on front lighting for vehicles in the premium segment – we also manufacture fog lights, daytime running light modules, front lights and small products such as indicator lights, door sill lights, license plate lights and various interior lights.
As a vehicle original equipment manufacturer, ZKW works closely with development centers in the automotive industry – so that we can continue to offer our customers innovative, tailor-made products such as halogen, xenon or LED headlights in the future.

Anyone learning at ZKW has qualified trainers at their side and is systematically supported and encouraged from the very beginning. In this way, we impart training content in a needs-oriented and individual way.
Training generally takes place at the main plant in Wieselburg. Even there, the apprentices take part in the complex, diverse processes within the widely ramified company. Only the process technology apprenticeship will take place at our Lower Austrian electronics site in Wiener Neustadt for the first time from the 2022 school year. With their degree in their pocket, the whole world of ZKW will then be open to them – in Austria and internationally.

Basic information about training at ZKW
Training takes place at two learning locations – in the company and at vocational school. Apprentices spend around 80 percent of their time in the company, with the remainder being spent on theoretical and practical training at vocational school. Depending on the chosen career path, training at ZKW takes three to four years.

As part of the mechatronics apprenticeship, apprentices deal with the manufacture of machines and system components. Initially on manually operated machines and subsequently also with CNC machines. Furthermore, the apprentice deals with the assembly of such components as well as the electrical and pneumatic construction of the system, which is finally put into operation.
The tasks of maintaining and repairing these and other machines, such as plastic injection molding machines, are also part of the mechatronics apprenticeship. In the course of the apprenticeship, the apprentice learns all the skills required to assemble, commission and operate mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and robotics systems in an automated system.

Areas of responsibility and activities
Toolmaking technicians manufacture cutting tools, punching tools and forming tools for processing machines, as well as the devices used to attach workpieces and tools. This also includes the maintenance and repair of these tools. They process metals using techniques such as measuring, scribing, filing, grinding, sawing, drilling, reaming, thread cutting, riveting and chiseling, straightening and bending as well as polishing. They are also proficient in gluing, soft and hard soldering, scraping and the production of simple springs.
Other techniques used by toolmaking technicians include longitudinal turning and facing, milling, eroding and electric welding. Toolmaking technicians produce fits and relevant workpieces in accordance with the prescribed fitting standards. They use precision machining techniques.
During the maintenance and repair of machine tools and tools, toolmaking technicians systematically search for faults and malfunctions, then narrow them down and finally rectify them. The toolmaking technicians read plans and production drawings or produce them themselves. They also create and modify production programs for computer-aided CNC machine tools.

Plastic objects are of great importance in modern technology, for example in the household, leisure and automotive sectors. They are manufactured using high-quality, computer-controlled, semi-automatic and fully automatic injection molding machines and systems. Plastics technicians know the properties of the materials to be processed and their specific areas of application. They set up the systems for the respective production process, optimize the production sequence, monitor the quality of the products and take appropriate measures in the event of faults.

Information technologists in the field of technology are – to put it simply – computer technicians, whereby their field of activity can extend to all devices of “information and communication technology” (abbreviated to “IT”). This primarily includes computers of all kinds (personal computers or “PCs”, servers and workstations in networks, laptops/notebooks, etc.), additional or peripheral devices (printers, scanners, copiers, input devices such as mouse and keyboard) as well as networks (connection lines or devices for wireless connection, so-called “wireless networks”).
The most important tasks of information technologists in the field of technology are the assembly of IT devices, the installation and setup of new IT devices, the installation of software (operating systems, office programs – these are programs for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation creation or data acquisition, etc.), the consultation and training of users, the ongoing maintenance of devices and software (installation of improved versions of programs, so-called “updates”) as well as the repair of defective devices and cables or the replacement of defective individual parts (e.g. computer hard disks).

Optimized production processes are the heart of production at ZKW Elektronik GmbH. Process technicians ensure that these processes are constantly improved by controlling, monitoring and repairing these machines, as well as operating, maintaining and optimizing the associated computer systems.
With this specialized knowledge, process technicians become an irreplaceable element within every production process. They are experts who not only systematically monitor production processes and investigate their weak points, but also document and continuously improve them. They not only look at the production section of the overall production process, but also keep an eye on the processes in logistics and quality control as higher-level experts.

We offer an apprenticeship with Matura from the second year of the apprenticeship; determined apprentices can take the Berufsreifeprüfung during their apprenticeship. This is taught in German, English and mathematics – at ZKW and mainly during working hours.
